Flooring Care

Solid hardwood floors repay a little care with a lifetime of value.

Tips for caring for your hardwood floor

Solid hardwood floors are among the easiest flooring products to keep clean. Protect their warmth and character with simple, everyday cleaning techniques. To ensure the full benefit of the warranties and to extend the beauty of your new hardwood flooring, we recommend the following steps:

What to do:

  • Regularly dust or vacuum. When vacuuming, use a bristle brush attachment, Do not use vacuums with beater bars. Canister vacuums with special bare floor attachments are the surest way to get rid of all the dirt and dust.
  • Bona Premium Hardwood Floor Care System® is an excellent product to use on hardwood floors, and can be used as dry dusting or damp for mopping. Damp mop when needed. Avoid excess water.
  • Wipe up spills
  • Use door mats at entryways and high traffic areas - i.e. in front of kitchen sink or refrigerator.
  • Use felt glides on all furniture legs. Narrow wheels, sharp wooden legs and metal furniture legs can scratch and dent hardwood floors. Any furniture that rests directly on top of a hardwood floor should have cloth protector under all legs.
  • Lift and place furniture - do not drag.

What not to do:

  • Do not use abrasive or harsh chemicals (ammonia, dish detergent, powdered all purpose cleaner, bleach) to clean.
  • Do not use any products containing silicone or wax (Endust®, Pledge®, Murphy's Oil Soap®).
  • Do not use vinegar & water - it may harm the finish.
  • Do not let water stand on the floor.
  • Do not allow heavy furniture to rest on small metal tips or hard plastic domes.
